Sound Travels Through Gaps

Airborne sound behaves much like air itself: it finds the openings. A wall cavity with batt insulation that leaves voids at the edges, around outlets and at the top plate will pass considerably more noise than one that is completely filled. Because spray foam expands to fill the cavity entirely, it closes those paths.

Open-Cell Foam Performs Better Acoustically

For sound specifically, open-cell foam outperforms closed-cell. Its softer, more open structure absorbs sound energy instead of reflecting it, making it the better choice for interior partitions, media rooms and any space where quiet is the priority. Closed-cell still helps, but it is chosen for other reasons.

Realistic Expectations

Insulation is one part of sound control. Doors, windows, ductwork and the structural connection between floors all carry sound, and no insulation product overcomes a hollow-core door or an untreated duct run. We will tell you what to expect.

Where Noise Actually Gets In

Sound reaches a room the same way air does, through the openings rather than through the solid material. Electrical boxes, the gap at the top plate, ductwork, recessed lights and the perimeter of a poorly fitted batt are all paths. Filling the cavity completely closes them, which is why a fully filled wall consistently outperforms one with the same nominal R-value installed loosely.
