Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) is a spray-applied plastic that can form a continuous insulation and air sealing barrier on walls, roofs, around corners, and on all contoured surfaces. It is made by mixing and reacting unique liquid components at the job site to create foam.
The liquids react very quickly when mixed, expanding on contact to create foam that insulates, seals gaps, and can form moisture and vapour barriers. SPF resists heat transfer extremely well and offers a highly effective solution for reducing unwanted air infiltration through cracks, seams and joints.
R-value is the most common measure of an insulation material's thermal resistance — the greater the R-value, the more effective the insulation. But a manufacturer's R-value only applies to properly installed insulation; conventional fibreglass batt and blown-in systems often perform far below their rated R-value. In fact, the R-value of insulation is substantially diminished by air leakage — often over 40% of a home's heat loss is due to air leakage.

Spray polyurethane foam arrives as two liquid components that are heated, pressurised and combined at the spray gun. They react on contact with the surface, expanding many times in volume within seconds and curing into a solid within minutes. Because it is liquid at the moment of application, it flows into gaps, around pipes and wiring and into irregular cavities that no pre-cut product can fill neatly.
A batt only performs to its rated R-value if it is installed perfectly, with no compression, no gaps at the edges and nothing passing through it. In practice, wiring, plumbing, electrical boxes and framing irregularities mean that rarely happens. Spray foam removes that variable, because it fills whatever shape the cavity actually is rather than the shape it was supposed to be.
