Sealing Beats Adding R-Value

Most homes do not lose heat because the insulation is too thin. They lose it because air moves freely through gaps the insulation never touched: the rim joist, the attic hatch, around wiring and plumbing, at the top and bottom plates of every wall. Spray foam addresses both problems at once, which is why it typically outperforms an equivalent thickness of batt insulation in practice rather than just on paper.
