With the increasing sophistication of home entertainment technology, home theaters are more popular than ever. Recreating the theater experience usually involves high-volume sound that could be unwelcome in other parts of a poorly insulated house.

That's why insulation with excellent sound-control properties makes a dramatic impact in a home theater — keeping outside noise out so you can enjoy the entertainment, and keeping music and dialogue from migrating to other rooms.

Sound Isolation Is the Whole Point

A home theatre has one insulation requirement above all others: keep the sound in, and keep everything else out. Airborne sound travels through gaps, so a cavity that is completely filled performs far better than one with batts that leave voids at the edges and around penetrations.

• All four walls, including interior partitions
• Ceiling assembly, particularly below bedrooms
• Floor assembly if the room is above living space
• Around electrical boxes, vents and door frames
• The door itself, which is usually the weakest link

Open-Cell Foam for Acoustics

For sound absorption specifically, open-cell foam outperforms closed-cell. Its softer, more open structure absorbs sound energy rather than reflecting it, which both reduces transmission to adjoining rooms and improves the acoustics inside the room by controlling reflections and standing waves.

Manage Expectations Honestly

Insulation is one part of sound isolation, not all of it. Doors, ducts and the structural connection between floors all carry sound, and a proper isolation design addresses those too. We will tell you what the insulation will and will not achieve rather than overselling it.

Get the Insulation in Before the Finishes

Home theatres are finished rooms with fitted seating, acoustic panels, cabling and equipment. Once that is in place, opening the walls again to improve the insulation is disruptive and expensive. Doing the wall, ceiling and floor assemblies during the build is a fraction of the cost and gives the acoustic design a solid foundation to work from.
