A bedroom that is too cold in winter, too hot in summer or noisy at night affects sleep directly. Most of those problems come from the same source: an exterior wall or ceiling that is not sealed properly, letting outside temperature and outside noise straight through.

The two problem bedrooms in almost every house are the one above the garage and the one with sloped ceilings under the roof. Both are surrounded by unconditioned space on more sides than a normal room, and both respond dramatically to proper air-sealing and insulation.

A Quieter Room

Spray foam fills the cavity completely, so there are no gaps for sound to pass through. Open-cell foam is the better performer for airborne noise, which makes it a good choice for interior bedroom partitions in a busy household.

Temperature Stability Matters Overnight

Bedrooms are unoccupied and unheated by activity for hours at a time, then need to be comfortable through the night. A room with a leaky exterior wall loses temperature quickly once the heating cycles down, which is why a bedroom can feel fine at bedtime and cold by morning. Sealing the envelope keeps the temperature steady across the whole night rather than only just after the furnace runs.
